Curious About Botox?

Here’s what you should know about getting this popular cosmetic injectable.

Botox has become one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the US, providing our patients with younger, smoother, wrinkle-free skin. Of course, many myths surround Botox treatment and what it can do. Our Salt Lake City, UT, dermatologist Dr. Ivan Flint wants to provide as much information as possible so that patients can better understand whether or not this treatment is ideal for them.

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic treatment made from a purified form of botulinum toxin. When injected into the muscles of the face, this neurotoxin temporarily relaxes the muscles and prevents them from contracting. As a result, dynamic lines and wrinkles are smoothed away. Since Botox targets muscle contractions, it works differently from dermal fillers such as Dysport, Juvederm and Restylane.

What cosmetic issues can Botox treat?

Botox effectively treats crow’s feet (lines around the eyes), smile lines (lines around the mouth and cheeks) and forehead wrinkles. Of course, not all wrinkles can be treated with Botox treatment. The lines and wrinkles that form over time due to collagen loss may not be as responsive to Botox treatment.

If you aren’t sure whether you could benefit from Botox treatment, take a moment to look at your skin in the mirror. Squint or smile, and you’ll see certain lines and wrinkles are more visible. These are the wrinkles that Botox can treat.

What goes into getting Botox treatment?

Many people in Salt Lake City, UT, turn to Botox treatment because it can target lines and wrinkles without needing surgery. Plus, the procedure takes a couple of minutes and is relatively painless. When administered, injections are easily tolerated, as they only cause a slight stinging or pinching sensation. Of course, you may choose to get topical anesthesia over the area to numb the area before treatment. Botox also boasts no downtime so that you can return to work or your regular activities.
